The person will define a set of pragmatic and efficient processes and policies to ensure effective strategic and operational planning. This is to enhance the delivery of FIFA’s qualifiers (FIFA World Cup and Olympic Football Tournaments) and to ensure that the FIFA members operationally comply with the governing body’s regulations & guidelines.
The Director of Competitions will act as a ‘centre of competence’ on all relevant strategic developments, current or future, in the sport event industry for different practice areas and be a true role model in representing all functions both internally and towards external partners.
Jointly with the other Directors, the Director of Competitions will take responsibility for the overall result of their duties and always act with the big picture in mind.

 

The Role

The Director of Competitions is responsible for the successful implementation of all projects assigned by the Chief Tournaments & Events Officer at or above benchmark level of the set strategic objectives, in a timely manner.

Ensure all necessary resources to guarantee an efficient and high-quality build-up of the competitions sub-division and oversee the competitions management, FIFA’s Qualifiers and teams for international matches.

Key Responsibilities

STRATEGIC
– Establish an appropriate operational structure as well as effective processes and polices for the own division and its tasks.
– Ensure that relevant FIFA procedures and directives are applied within the sub-division.
– Follow the industry trends to anticipate changes in your sectors in a timely manner.

LEADERSHIP
– Run the administration of the Competitions’ Division and manage the competitions sub-division.
– Collaborate closely with the FIFA legal department on all legal matters related to competitions and supports the Chief Officer in making sure that competitions activities. occur in compliance with applicable local laws and FIFA guidelines/instructions.
OPERATIONS
– Design and implement efficient competition plans and procedures for all the tournaments. Where applicable, cooperate with the other sub-divisions.
– Organize the Knowledge Management & Debrief process within it’s own sub-division.
COMMUNICATION
– Liaise between sub-divisions as Tournaments, Operations and Services to develop match schedules for all tournaments, including venues, match days, draw procedures, etc.
– Ensure primary contact on competitions’ relevant issues for the local organizers.
– Responsible for the communication of relevant information within the Tournaments & Events division and other stakeholders within FIFA.

 

Qualifications & Skills
– University or Major Degree in business management
– Project Management Certification
– 10+ years’ senior management in sport/event organisation or in a mega project, preferably a world class football event
– 6 years in competition management of mega (football-) events
– Experienced negotiator in an international context
– Excellent competition management knowledge and experience
– Exceptional Project Management skills
– Computer-literate: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and familiar with SAP
– Fluent in English, any additional languages are an asset
– Open to travel regularly
